“Why advertising needs more voices”

In the midst of the pandemic lockdown, Lief’s founder Margo Mars stepped on a giant red dot in front of 5 (male) camera-men and a huge empty theatre for her first live-stream public speaking on national television and a global internet TED community. Gulp. “My talk was all about why the public should care about who is creating Advertising. It had no chance to share laughs and cries with an audience but is still one of my proudest moments, leaving me with a taste for more!”

‘Whose lens is it anyway?’ is all about how advertising stories shape our world way more than we might think. Through this talk, Margo is encouraging the public to demand transparency from the brands that are telling the stories that shape their world. Representation is without a doubt getting better in front of the camera, but diversity in major work remains astonishingly lacking behind it. Big-budget acclaimed directors are shaping the way we think and are being trusted with everything, from tampons to power tools. The system that maintains the status quo urgently needs to change to ensure a positive story both in front of and behind the camera.

“TED is all about spreading good ideas. I thought it was a good idea to give our industry a little push, as seen from the public – who, up until now, are pretty in the dark about how much advertising is shaping the way they see things.”
